In-App Browser and TON Sites

Telegram launched an in-app browser supporting decentralized websites called “TON Sites.” Announced on July 31, this feature is available on mobile and desktop versions, allowing users to switch between websites and messaging seamlessly.

Telegram CEO Pavel Durov highlighted the significance, stating it merges communication with news consumption, making Web3 tech accessible to nearly one billion monthly users.

Mini-App Store and Stars Payment System

Telegram launched a Mini App store, enabling users to discover and interact with various applications within the Telegram ecosystem. The store includes search options, app previews, and the ability to share mini-apps in Telegram Stories.

The update also introduces “Stars,” a new in-app payment system for mini-apps. Users can send Stars to friends, facilitating transactions within Telegram. Over 500 million of the 950 million users interact with Mini Apps monthly.

The success of Web3 Games on Telegram

Telegram has seen significant success with Web3 games. Hamster Kombat, a four-month-old crypto game, has surpassed 300 million players, making it the third-fastest app to reach 150 million. Players tap a hamster to earn tokens and upgrade their virtual crypto exchange.

Catizen, a Web3 social entertainment platform, has amassed 26 million players since March and earned $16 million from in-app purchases, with $160,000 dedicated to rescuing stray cats.
Both games utilize Toncoin (TON), The Open Network’s native cryptocurrency. TON’s value increased by 467% over the past 12 months, reaching $6.78.

Looking Forward

These developments highlight Telegram’s commitment to integrating Web3 technologies and expanding its platform. By combining communication, web browsing, decentralized applications, and crypto payments, Telegram is positioning itself at the forefront of the Web3 revolution.
